چکیده

1 Area Supervisor, South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department, Greenville, S. C. 29601. We in vocational rehabilitation need to stop occasionally and examine our procedures with a critical eye. We get engrossed in the job at hand, and find it amazingly easy to neglect determining whether there might be a better way to accomplish a task, thereby improving our services to handicapped people. Recently, we decided to look at our amputee clinics in an attempt to evaluate two methods being used to fit recent lowerextremity amputees with prostheses. We had been following the conventional, medically recommended policy of seeing the amputee after the stump had healed and shrunk. At that time, the amputee was instructed in the proper method of wrapping the stump with elastic bandage to aid shrinkage, and the clinic chief determined when measurements for a prosthesis could be obtained. This seemed to be the way to prepare an amputee for an artificial limb. However, prosthetic clinic teams in other parts of the country began using a temporary pylon, or preparatory prosthesis, instead of wrapping with an elastic bandage, with good results. We felt the need to evaluate those two methods with the following questions in mind: What are the actual costs in each case? Which procedure permits the amputee to work sooner? From the medical viewpoint, does one method of fitting an amputee have advantages over the other?

Three–Dimensional Force Analysis of Gait of a Trans-Femoral Amputee with Prosthesis

Background: Prosthetic devices should provide proper alignment of segments and joints for efficient gait. Rehabilitation specialists should carefully assess the best fit of prosthesis for proper force distribution and comfort. The purpose of this paper was to examine the three-dimensional forces of a permanent prosthesis compared with the temporary prosthesis of an amputee during gait. Case des...

Use of temporary plaster of plastic pylons preparatory to fitting a permanent above-knee or below-knee prosthesis.

Temporary or preparatory prostheses for use by lower-extremity amputees have been mentioned frequently and used occasionally for many years (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), but they have not been adopted readily in the United States. Many reasons have been given why preliminary fitting has not been done and these have included: 1. stump damage because of malfitting plaster or other temporary socket, 2. rapid s...

Evaluation of a Viscoelastic Ankle-Foot Prosthesis at Slow and Normal Walking Speeds on an Able-Bodied Subject

Objectives: This paper describes further improvement and preliminarily evaluation of a novel viscoelastic ankle-foot prosthesis prototype. The objective was to control the ankle hysteresis at slow and normal walking speeds. Methods: Inspired by the ankle biomechanics, in which the hysteresis differs based on the gait speeds, a manually damping control mechanism imbedded in the prosthesis for...

Temporary prosthetic fitting for below-knee amputation.

The problems encountered in fitting and using the permanent below-knee prosthesis in developing countries are the high price of the prosthesis, inadequate fitting and lack of proper rehabilitation. In Turkey, the preferred treatment of the stump post-operatively is by the soft dressing method with bandaging for maturation and shrinkage. Generally, the application of the permanent prosthesis is ...

Balance and mobility during daily activities, low back pain, amputated and intact side pain in Iranian lower limb amputees

Background and Aim: Lower limb amputation and prosthesis use affect mobility and other aspects of amputees’ daily activities. Awareness of these effects may aid health-care and rehabilitation systems in improving quality of life and well-being of lower limb amputees. A questionnaire was used to collect data about the conditions resulting from lower limb amputation, mobility, low back pain, bala...
